Get to know Jacob and hear his advice for other small business owners in his Q&A!
1. When did you start your business?
September 2022

2. Why did you decide to start your business?
After working for the same union electrical company for 10 years, I felt the need for a change of pace. I wanted to find a challenge that would better myself while hoping to build something that could potentially be passed down or inherited in the future. YOU WILL NEVER KNOW IF YOU CAN DO IT IF YOU DON'T TRY!
3. What is your favorite memory in the business?
Camaraderie will be an everlasting memory as an electrical contractor. Working alongside your team to see an entire project come to completion and knowing it is safe and long-lasting builds mutual trust and friendships.

4. What is the most rewarding part of running a small business?
The most rewarding part of running an electrical contracting business is the combination of hands-on work, problem solving, and the direct impact it has on people's lives. All while you are helping the customer, you're also building lasting relationships.

5. What is the hardest part of running a small business?
Wearing many hats. Most smaller businesses in my trade do not have the overhead available to hire separate roles for specific tasks, which in many cases, leaves the owner to be the main role in estimating, bookkeeping, scheduling, hiring employees, being an onsite technician, etc.

6. How does the business get to positively impact your community?
We literally get to help people see again! Our main job is to help people day by day. I ranges anywhere between an in-home service call to make lights work again, or helping someone see a realistic build for a vision they have had to help build commercial buildings such as churches or stores. Every day, we get the opportunity to impact our community in a positive way.

7. Biggest challenge in the business?
Fluctuation. In my experience, the seasons have a lot to do with the amount of business we get. As hard as it is to keep things moving forward as an owner while business is on the slower side, it is even harder for the employees to accommodate the workload changes.

8. What makes your business different from your competition?
We take our priority of helping people seriously! Whether it's a small residential service call or a big new commercial build, "watt" you need is "watt" we do!! Also, we have brooms, so we can clean up our own mess at the end of the job ;)

9. Best tip for others in business?
Be sure to have any required licensing and insurance ready before diving in headfirst. Also, having any sort of business relationships prior to full start will be helpful, with both suppliers and clientele.

10. What’s something you wish someone had told you or that you wish you had learned earlier?
Finding a mentor that has already experienced running a business can make all the difference. Don't be afraid to ask for help from someone more successful than you! You might be surprised at just how willing they are to help.

11. The “just for fun” question - What is the “best” scar you earned as a kid and how did you earn it?
I have a scar right above my left eye. While we were young my brother and I were playing baseball in the yard, next thing I know the bat 'accidentally' came across my face. Thirteen stitches later and we were back to playing like nothing happened!

12. How has/did the SBDC help you in your business venture?
SBDC has helped Sprouse Electric tremendously! They helped us to start the business structure, gave advice on how to register business with counties, gave advice for growing business ventures, helped with business understandings such as NAICS codes and IBIS World, and so much more! As an emerging business leader I could not have found the required information I needed without the help of SBDC. Thank you!
