1. Name, Business Name, and the year you started your business.

Jessica Hyde MSN, APRN, PMHNP-BC; Beacon Psychiatry and Wellness, Opened 2025

2. Why did you start your business?

I started Beacon Psychiatry and Wellness because I love the work I do and want to serve the people of the Panhandle (I also serve others in TX and KS).  I enjoyed working as an independent contractor for a Nurse Practitioner owned office in Austin.  However, living in Austin was not ideal for this Amarillo raised girl.  I was thrilled to move back to Amarillo in 2024, and wanted to implement the same model of accessible mental health care in this area for those I am privileged to serve.

3. What’s your favorite memory in the business?

A favorite memory of mine was earlier in my career when we found the right medication for a woman. Through tears she said, "It's like I have glasses on my brain now."  That was a great day.

4. What’s the most rewarding part of owning your own business?

The most rewarding part of owning my own business is knowing that I can help others through consistent presentation of the mission, values, and character of Beacon.

5. What is the hardest part of owning your own business?

Because I enjoy helping others so much the administrative tasks are the most challenging, but necessary, parts of the business.  I enjoy the face time and collaboration with clients.  The administrative tasks are what I find tedious.

 6. How does your business get to positively impact your community?

Beacon Psychiatry and Wellness is here to serve TX and KS residents.  Beacon aims to provide accessible and compassionate mental health care with treatments that are custom-made for each unique individual.  Beacon offers psychiatric assessments, diagnosis, education, medication management, and appropriate referrals leading to improved wellbeing.

7. What’s the biggest challenge in your business?

The biggest challenge currently is getting the name out into the community.  Beacon is available as a resource for the Panhandle, and we can not help people until they know we are here.  I appreciate y'all for featuring me this month for this exact reason!

8. What makes your business different than your competition?

Beacon is currently accepting new patients immediately.  Our model of care is through tele-health appointments which allows easy accessibility for those who may live in remote areas, who are hesitant to travel for appointments, are busy, or prefer more privacy.  Beacon offers a space for individuals to be seen and heard. I am first and always a great listener.

9. What’s your best tip for others in business?

My best tip is to find trustworthy people skilled in the various roles the business needs to handle the areas that are not your strengths.  For instance... I have a fabulous insurance expert handling billing and insurance issues for me.  That is a huge weight off my shoulders.

       10. How has the SBDC helped you build your business?

The SBDC has been a wonderful resource for helping me organize my thoughts, prioritize needs, recommending area resources, bouncing ideas, and looking at financials. I have learned that seeking the advice of those who are experts in business allows me to use best practices with confidence.

11. What’s your favorite movie or TV series?

I do not watch many movies or much TV.  I do enjoy reading, especially Willa Cather.  The way she paints the West in her storytelling is always captivating for me.  I do love comedy and am open for some TV series recommendations!
