A Big Day for Shopping Small
Small Business Saturday is a shopping holiday within the United States that is held annually the Saturday after Thanksgiving. This holiday promotes shopping locally within the community so as to support the local businesses within the area.
Sponsored by the Texas Panhandle Regional Development Corporation, this year’s Small Business Saturday was hosted by West Texas A&M’s Small Business Development Center (SBDC), and co-hosted by Sacred Maroon in Canyon, Texas. With the help of 17 local businesses, the SBDC held a scavenger hunt for the community to go out and have fun while also visiting some of their favorite shops, and discovering some new ones too. Over 100 people came out to have fun with our scavenger hunt, with another 100 people showing up to shop around the square. These same people talked about how fun the scavenger hunt was and how it spiced up their shopping experience at the square. Along with the scavenger hunt, small prizes and a grand prize were given away as well. With 12 businesses donating items for the small prizes, there were lots of chances to win. The grand prize, which was $1,000, was donated to us by our sponsors: Happy State Bank, Amarillo National Bank, First United Bank, and the Canyon Chamber of Commerce.
Businesses reported over $13,000 in combined sales on this day alone. Many participants had positive feedback. Some of the participating businesses claimed that they loved the energy that this holiday brought to the community. Dallas Bell, owner of Burrowing Owl Bookstore, said that the Shop Small Canyon Scavenger Hunt on Small Business Saturday was “a fantastic way to support the local community of small shops and to bring new customers to the square. Bell “loved Small Business Saturday 2017! Loved meeting new customers due to the scavenger hunt, and being part of the community wide event.”
This was a great opportunity for our community to discover the small businesses that are right next door to them and to spread the word about shopping small. We can’t wait for next year, and we’re excited to have the opportunity to see everyone again! Until next year, #shopsmall.
