Free Credit Reports

But......

Free credit reports are finally here for American consumers, but credit scores (a numeric value) are not free and reporting firms will try to sell you other services.  As of September 1st all consumers have access to their reports from Experian, Equifax and TransUnion, the three major credit reporting agencies.  You can order your free report by:

bullet

Internet - annualcreditreport.com

Telephone (toll-free) - 877-322-8228

The SBDC recommends that everyone get a copy of their own credit report.  (If using the internet, be certain you are at the correct website - imposters are already cropping up on the web.)   Inaccuracies in credit reports are common and can lead to an array of problems for anyone borrowing money, seeking employment, buying insurance, or renting a residence.  In today's world, active management of your personal credit will lower your living costs, and plays a critical role in your ability to successfully operate a business.

Red flags for those who see your credit report include:
bullet

Too many accounts

bullet

Late payments

bullet

Tax liens

bullet

Bankruptcy

bullet

Maxed out credit

bullet

Too many "hard" inquiries
